Named after one of Penfolds Barossa Valley vineyards, Koonunga Hill is a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy - offering richness, balance and lasting quality.

Well-regarded since launch, the Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the typical cellarability that all Penfolds wines are renowned for. The wine has excellent structure and length and while it is ready for drinking now, it will gain further complexity with short term cellaring.

With each vintage, varietal batches are selected for Grandfather. These batches are individually aged in seasoned old oak casks before being blended together at 14 years of age. This blend is then introduced into the 'Grandfather Solera'. This Solera consists of six stages that are designed to fully integrate all components offering consistency and freshness with a final minimum average blended age of 20 years. Deep amber/mahogany in colour with green-gold tinges, this is a blend of the finest old tawnies. The palate shows classical Penfolds fruitcake, liquorice and vanillin oak flavours with a sweet full and round mid-palate, and a finish that persists on and on.

The Father Grand Tawny Port is a superb blend of tawny ingredients, matured in oak barrels for a guaranteed minimum average of 10 years. It has an exceptional balance of oak and fruit, lingering on the palate before a clean, tight finish.

In 1844 Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill to produce fortified wines. Launched with the 1990 vintage in 1993, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, yet still possessing structure and rich depth of flavour. Textbook cabernet sauvignon, the expressive Bin 407 demonstrates the reward of Penfolds multi-regional blending philosophy. A core of ripe fruit is well supported by sensitive use of French and American oak. After the aromatic impression, one might expect a forbidding palate. Not so. It's remarkably approachable, yet clearly built for a long spell in the dungeon. The cool dark fruits are very concentrated and varietal. The leafy notes on the nose morph into char-grilled savoury flavours of grilled capsicum and cumin spiced eggplant, infused by sandalwood and cherry wood smoke. The tannins are graphite-like, fine but reassuringly persistent, with a faint suggestion of bitter dark chocolate. At the time of tasting the wine is very energetic, dancing the tango at full tempo. Don't expect a slow waltz anytime soon. One for the long haul.

The palate texture is suggestive of cocoa powder while being framed by just enough savoury oak to add structure without dominating. Leading with black fruit characters, it progresses with dark plum and hints of gamey richness (roasted venison). Baking spice notes and a delicate icing sugar dusting add nuance without tipping into overt sweetness. Lively acidity carries through from start to finish, perfectly accompanied by fine structural tannins that contribute to an enduring balance. Despite its depth and layers, it carries itself with typical Bin 28 ease; its complexity is apparent yet approachable.

Bin 2 was first released in 1960, yet was discontinued in Australia in the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom. The original Bin 2 was an 'Australian Burgundy' style (despite its Rhône varieties) - typically a soft, medium-bodied wine based on Shiraz. The Bin 2 blend of Shiraz and Mataro is still relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. Also known as Monastrell or Mourvèdre, Mataro was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. Sometimes used in fortified wine production, this grape is widely planted in the Barossa Valley. It is greatly valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip.

In this traditional French blend the sauvignon blanc has given a complex range of exotic aromas and flavours suggestive of lychees, paw paw, Turkish musk and passionfruit, backed by hints of gooseberry and dried wild herbs. The Semillon has added complementary lemon and lime flavours and help fill out the midpalate providing weight and depth.
