A Penfolds classic that has never needed to follow fashion, St Henri has remained remarkably true to its original style since its first commercial vintage in 1957. Unlike many of Australia's great reds, it relies on no new oak, instead maturing in large, seasoned vats that allow the Shiraz to develop with minimal interference. The result is a wine where fruit, savoury character and structure take centre stage. The 2023 vintage is brooding and layered, revealing dark and blue fruits alongside dark spice and lightly roasted coffee. As the wine opens, mineral and savoury notes emerge, with hints of flint, ironstone, fresh nettles and oolong tea adding intrigue and depth. Juicy and generous on the palate, the wine carries a deep core of dark fruit balanced by the umami character of rare steak and olive brine. Finely woven tannins provide a firm, assured structure, while notes of Chinese tea, fennel and liquorice add detail through the long, restrained finish. 2023 St Henri combines youthful generosity with the structure to evolve beautifully in the cellar through to 2050.
